Long time no hear everyone!

Sorry about taking so long to update the site. We have been extremely busy with bird rescues and work. So, here we are again.

First things first.... we are having our Pet Birds 101 class on Dec. 23rd at the Central Florida Zoo. There is no cost to come to the class and it will be approximately one hour long. Please come out and see us. We will be in the building before you enter the zoo on the right hand side. Can't wait to see you there!

Also, we have finally received our Tax Exempt status. Yahoooooo! Now we can start asking for grants. If anyone who is reading this has any idea on how to do that, please let us know. We can use your expertise.

All the birds are doing well. We have gotten a few new additions to the flock. We have also had some that have been adopted out to great homes. This is wonderful news and it is all we want for these lovely animals.

Also, I am now working with my husband at his place of employment. I started on the 17th and am soon to be on the phones doing my actual job, which will be customer service on the phone. Whooohoooo! I can't wait to get started!

Hopefully I will be able to update the site more now that I will be working at a place where I can actually be on the puter. You will all probably get tired of me typing. LOL!

The rescue is going so well. We just wish me had more room to fit all the birds that need our help. Maybe in a few years or so we can upgrade. Wouldn't that be nice? YES!

Last weekend we did the Toys for Tots at the Chanel 9 location. That was really fun. We brought a couple of birds and just hung out and answered people's questions. It was a fun time.

Ok, have to go for now. I promise I will upkeep the blog more. Thanks for taking a look and we hope to see you again.

Until then, take care.

Class on Sunday, Oct. 14th at 2pm at the Sanford Zoo

Hey everyone!

This is to let folks know that we have scheduled the basic bird course at the Sanford Zoo in the Discovery Center on October 14th at 2pm.

This is a required course for folks who want to adopt from us, and we also have volunteers and Fosters take the course as well...

Hope to see you there!

Neal

A eulogy for a Friend

This is Neal...

Bobby died yesterday, and I lost it.
I have been trying to handle the stress of all the other things going on, and the grief of Bobby's impending death. Phoenix brought her (turned out to be a girl) to Dr. Holder, and her cancer had progressed and there was nothing they could do. The put her under anesthesia and gave her sodium barbitol.

Phoenix had been crying all the day before, and most of yesterday, and as I started to take down her cage, I just totally lost it, and wept.

Bobby is a special story because she was wild caught and had such a miserable life before us. She was several days from dying when we got her and she was in bad shape. With us she got good food, a huge cage with plenty of toys, and we let her grow her feathers out so she could fly. She loved to fly around the room and would squawk seemingly with joy at her freedom of movement. She was caught in the wild over 15 years ago and brought to this country to be a breeding bird, and lived all that time in a small dirty cage, pumping out babies for her owners profit. When she got sick, all they cared for was to unload the bird on someone else and make a profit.

Phoenix found her like this at a bird show. The breeder was drunk and Phoenix desperately wanted to buy her to save her, and I wouldn't let her because it just encourages the breeders behavior.

That night Phoenix had nightmares, and she tracked down that breeder and bought her anyway.

We rushed Bobb(ie) to the vet and had her treated for a bacterial infection, and she had surgery to remove a tumor on her cloaca. $900 later she was healthy... for the moment.
We knew that she still had cancer, and it was just a matter of time, but she was an amazing fighter and she did her best to stay alive.. When she molted, she went from having dull sickly feathers to bright new ones, and when her wings had finished growing, she would test them on her t-stand like a helicopter ready for take off, Squawking the whole time. She then would fly around the room in circles, enjoying what birds were meant to do.

I was hoping so much to finish the outdoor aviary so she had more room to fly, but that was not to happen.

Several days ago, she started to rapidly go down hill, and Phoenix would hold her to let her know she was loved. Finally, we had to take her to the vet, and release her from the pain she was obviously in.

Later the vet told us that she had cancer all through her intestinal track, so really there was nothing that could be done.

Bobby was an inspiration, and one of the reasons I do what I do. I hope that Phoenix and I made up, even just a little bit for the horrible things that were done to her, and gave her a little joy in life.

Bobby, we love you, and hope you now can fly free.

Sad News

Hi All.

I have some sad news to report.

Bobby, the Blue Crown Conure we rescued about a year ago has lost his battle with cancer. I noticed yesterday he was acting kind of funny and this morning I had to bring him to the vet. The vet had a poor prognosis and so we had to have him put down.

I guess this is a good thing as he no longer has to suffer. And, he has lived a great life since he has been with us. He was able to fly and eat good food and had a nice, huge cage... something he never had before.

Bobby was approx 15 years old and was captured in the wild and brought to the states. He has had a rough life and when we got him, he was almost dead. But, I am so thankful we got Bobby out of the bad situation he was in and that he enjoyed this last year in a good, loving home.

Bobby, you will be missed in our flock and I hope to see you again someday. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to be your friend and I hope wherever you are you are happy and can fly free every day. Bobby, we love you.

Handsome and Pretty the Parrotlets

This is Handsome and Pretty. Both are Parrotlets. He is the darker blue one and she is the lighter. Both he and the female, Pretty, have to go together as a pair. They are not friendly and will bite. They will need a large cage to fly around in. Both are fed pellets so there is no need to wean them. They also love apples and fruit of any kind. I will attach a photo of Pretty also. Please see above. If you are interested in adopting these two, please let us know.

Sammie the Umbrella Cockatoo

Sammie is a beautiful, male Cockatoo. We do not know Sammie's age or much about his history. All we do know is that Sammie is very scared of humans. We are working with him to see if we can change this, but it will take some time and understanding. If you want to work with Sammie, you must have a lot of time and patience. He can be a bit loud, but even though we stick our hand in his cage, he will not bite. Instead, he just runs away. If you are interested in adopting Sammie, please let us know.

Kali the Umbrella Cockatoo

This is Kali the Umbrella Cockatoo. Kali is a super sweet Cockatoo, but only to women. Kali does not like men. Sorry guys. Kali is approximately 9 years old. She is on a pellet diet which is great for a Cockatoo. She also likes apples. Kali can be loud and of course, can bite. But, she is a good bird and will do good in a one bird home. If you are interested in adopting Kali, please let us know.

Sunny the Spectacled Amazon

Sunny is a Spectacled Amazon. We are not sure of his age or sex, but he is a good bird. He has never bitten anyone, but will let you know when he does or does not want to be picked up. Sunny also can be somewhat loud, but not like a Cockatoo or Macaw. He is a smaller Amazon and loves to eat fruits and vegetables. He is also on pellets. I am pretty sure he will do well in a one bird home or maybe even with a couple of birds as long as you can spend proper time with him. He is very independant, but also enjoys human loving. Please let us know if you are interested in adopting Sunny.

Kano the Quaker Parakeet

This is Kano. He (or she) is a Quaker Parakeet. He is approximately 8 years old. He is like any other Quaker in that he is very cage protective. Once you get him out, he is fine. The trick is getting him out. He is currently rooming with Mango, but the two are not bonded and can be separated. Kano will do well in a home where he is the only bird and can be held and loved on a regular basis. If you are interested in adopting Kano, please let us know.

Mango the Sun Conure

Mango is a Sun Conure who is approximately 6 years old. He is a beautiful bird but is a bit afraid of humans. Once you get him out of his cage he is ok. But, the fun is getting him out. He loves fruit and is currently on pellets so you don't have to wean him onto them. We are not sure if Mango is a boy or girl as he has never been sexed. But, I call mango a boy. I think Mango would do well in a home where he is the only bird and is shown lots of love and attention. If you are interested in adopting Mango, please contact us.

Opi the Red Bellied Parrot

This is Opi. Opi is a Red Bellied Parrot. He has been DNA sexed as a male. He is also micro-chipped for safety. He is tame, but needs some T.L.C. as he is a bit timid when it comes to being around humans. His former owner did not take him out of his cage very often due to his biting. He, however, has not bit myself or Neal. Opi was born in 2005 so he is approx 2 years old. He loves fruit and is on pellets already so you don't have to wean him onto them. Yay! Opi is a good bird and needs someone to give him a stable home with lots of love and time. Please let us know if you are interested in adopting Opi.

Lots of Birds for Adoption

Hi Everyone....

Guess what? Within the past 3 weeks, we have acquired approx 10 birds for adoption. Yes, 10! These guys really need to find loving, permanent homes. I am going to try an add photos of all of them to the blog. Hopefully, you will be able to see all these beautiful creatures.

Each one has a unique story. They are all pretty tame, although some need some T.LC. If you know of anyone who wants to adopt a bird, please keep us in mind. All of our adoptees must take one of our Pet Birds 101 class, plus fill out our Adoption Application and then have a home inspection done. There is also a small adoption fee. Not too much to do to adopt one of these great animals.

Also, we are going to try and implement a section on our web site for the former owners of these birds. We have been asked by some of the former owners to have an update page and a photo of their bird. We would like to accomodate these requests and we will try to do so.

Anyway, what a beautiful day it is to wake up and listen to the songs of a bird. We should all be thankful that we have these guys in our lives. Lets not take advantage of this, but instead, lets try to take care of them as best we can.

Have a super day everyone.

Updates for August.

Lots going on, so there has been very little time to sit down and write about it!

The Orlando bird show was HORRID...

I usually dont say things against the bird show, but some of the breeders there were absolutely terrible. Sick birds, over crowding... Blah...

The good news is that we saved a couple of Green Singing Finches that we caught the next day that got away from the breeder. They are now recovering and looking quite good!

Birds have been coming in steadilty, some in better shape then others.

Tonia Bowen is now our Volunteer Director, and thank God for her... She is a great help!

We are getting our S.O.A.R. Van this weekend! We found a nice used van that we can use for rescue work, hauling cages, etc. I cant wait to get it!

And last our next Basic Bird class will be a Chief's Bird Cabin Sept. 15th

Laterz!

Update for Volunteers!

Hi everyone!

I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend!

This is just a note to let everyone know that we are having another basic birds course for people wanting to adopt a bird from S.O.A.R. and
for all new volunteers on the 28th of July starting at 11am. I want to thank Tari and Christina for coming last workshop, and I hope some more of you this time!

If you plan to come next Saturday, please drop us a note so we know how many to expect!

Otherwise,

Things have been busy busy busy!

The next few weeks are going to be very active for us, as things start to get rolling.

Here is the latest schedule –

Today, Phoenix and I actually set up an info table at the grand opening of the grand opening of the new Petco in Orange City.
This was a very last minute request by their management (I was dropping off our cards and introducing ourselves, and the main manager
said “you are setting up a table here for our grand opening day after tomorrow right?”). This is our foot in the door at Petco, and they
are willing to let us have classes there and at other stores around Orlando, making it much more convenient for folks to take.

Next weekend the 28th, we have the workshop, which will be much fun.

The weekend after that, the weekend of the 4th and 5th of August, we are setting up a tent and a booth at the Mount Dora Animal Wisdom Festival.
As we really do not know what to expect (as this is a new festival) we really would not mind some company to join us! We plan to bring
a couple of birds, and will have a short presentation to do on stage.

Sunday August 12th, we will be setting up a booth at the Orlando Bird Show in a different location than usual. We will be in the educational
building instead of with the rest of the vendors. We hope to encourage all rescues and educational groups to come in there in the future.
The cool thing this show is that we are now the official group that will be trying to catch the birds that get away in the main building right
before the end of the show (mostly small birds) before they can get out when they open the garage doors. All of them we will be looking for homes for.

Sept. 1st we plan to have another Basic Bird class and Volunteer workshop either at our house or at Petco, or maybe even somewhere else…

Sept. 12th Phoenix and I will be joining Corene Fry to teach our classes at the Atlanta Bird Show.

Also, before I shut up here, please take a look at the website, as I have revamped the “How you can help” page.

It now lists all our projects, and areas volunteers can help.

Ok, nuff said, I am tired of typing and my glass of Irish Cream is empty!

So again, please let us know if you are coming, and if you have any comments on the website, or anything, please pipe up!

Yours,

Neal and Phoenix

For our newly signed up Volunteers

Hi everyone!

Just wanted to send you an email to thank you for signing up to help out with S.O.A.R.! There are a lot of exciting things going on, and we will need your help to get it done!

The Orlando Show went well. We didn’t raise a lot of money, but the Parrot Nutrition presentation drew quite a crowd, and some very good networking was achieved. One really good thing that came out of the show is that we talked to Mr. Tillman (the show director) and S.O.A.R. now has the job to catch all those birds who get out of their cages during the show, and we get to adopt them out, instead of them dying several days after, or getting released to the wild where they will most likely die as well.

In other news from the show, we are going to move our booth from the main area, to the building where the presentations are done. From there, I feel we will be much more safe actually bringing birds that need homes, as they won’t be exposed to the potential bird diseases in the main hall. There is a need to present to the public that adopted birds can be better than a baby bird, and if we have some examples, that might help alleviate the misconception that birds that need homes are difficult to handle.

In volunteering with us, we would like to know what you would like to volunteer for… Right now we are in a transition phase between being an unofficial rescue to something with larger goals and capabilities, so there is much to do.

Before we start hitting heavy on finding birds that need homes (advertising at the local bird stores, vets, etc) we would like to be able to have some foster folks available for overflow, and a waiting list of people who actually would like to have a bird. To do this, we have to work on training our foster network, and making a database on who has the capabilities and room for what. It is one thing to foster for say a lovebird, but a completely different matter for an Umbrella Cockatoo…

So if you are interested in fostering, please send me an email either at phoenix@floridasoar.org or my work at neal.dolphin@sungardhe.com and let me know that this is something you would like to do, what experience you have, what equipment you have (do you have a cage?), and I will get with you and see what kind of foster work would be best for you. We also have some very good resources for training, so if you do not have as much experience as you would like, we are here to help!

If fostering is not your thing, or if you would like to do more than fostering (which is a lot of work as it is), we are planning on setting up a booth at some local festivals around the central Florida area, and we will need help with that. We are right now building a 20x20 foot free flight aviary at our house, and if you would like to help with that, we would gladly appreciate it, not to mention help with cleaning cages, transporting birds, home inspections, help teaching classes, help taking care of the website, help with advertising and marketing ect. Etc.

Please let us know what you would like to do, and I am sure we can find a place for you to do it! J

Also, we are going to go to the Parrots in the Park, which is held on the first weekend of the month at Lake Eola in Orlando at the concessions area.

Enough for now, next note I will introduce you to some of our board members who have great experience with birds and rescue work.

Take Care!

Time is fleeting...

As the "get ready at the last minute" madness takes its toll... So listen closely -

Hey everyone! This is Neal with the latest updates to the official S.O.A.R. launch at the Orlando Exotic Bird Show June 10th at the Central Florida Fairgrounds!

This is an exciting time for us, taking our rescue efforts from word of mouth to a real full blown non-profit corporation. We have seen the need for a bird rescue in Florida for quite a long time, and we are very happy that this is finally coming to pass.

But at the same time I am very nervous at the prospect of what could happen. Our facility right now is our home, and any rescues come into our home with open arms. However, we only have room for so many rescue birds. We desperately need to have good people who know birds to be able to foster some out to until we can find them forever homes. The nightmare would be that we open our doors and we suddenly have 50 screaming cockatoos that need help!

With that nervousness comes the cost of even getting each bird looked at by a vet. The vet we use is Florida Wild Vet. Hospital, and they have an excellent facility with good capable people. However, they are not cheap, and they are the biggest expense we have to deal with for our rescue. This is why we not only need volunteers, but we need some cold hard cash!

Well, enough of this hot air! See you at the show!

New Page

Hi All!

Welcome to the new web page and thanks for taking a look. Neal and I hope you have a good time here and find some excellent info to help you with your bird friend. As time goes on, we will be adding things and updating as much as possible.

Also, there is a bird show this coming weekend in Orlando, FL. We will be giving a presentation so please stop by if you can.

All the birds are well. They seem to have adjusted very well to the new house. Thank goodness! It is amazing how fast birds cope with things. I am so proud of them!

Anyway, that is enough for now. I will write more tomorrow.

Have a super night.

Phoenix and Neal
